The Decentered Archive
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has a profound effect on academics’ engagement with the histories of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union. With ‘central’ state archives now off-limits, archival epistemics and practices are up for discussion. This blog is intended to serve as a platform for multilateral and transnational reflection and discussion of past and present archival practices and epistemics that shape(d) historical research covering the political, economic, social and cultural histories of multiethnic regions once under Russian and Soviet rule. At the same time, it is to provide orientation for both young academics on the postgraduate level as well as advanced researchers whose previous research did not include archives on the ‘peripheries’ of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union. To this end, the blog will also offer practical information on the archival landscape beyond the metropoles. The latter comes in different forms of essays, collegial field reports and conversations along with basic information about holdings of, access to and working conditions in state archives, libraries and independent repositories.
Pacific Russia
Pacific Russia is the online plattform of the Networr ‘Russia’s North Pacific’ which was established in 2017 by the Max Weber Foundation and the Chair for Russia-Asia Studies at LMU Munich. With a focus on the complex interrelations of Russia with China, Japan, (North and South) Korea, Canada and the United States and their respective indigenous community the project brings together research on Pacific Russia as a region that was shaped by different peopless and states, their rivalries, cooperations and conflicts. The goal of this network project is to support research on this region, support academic cooperations and exchange of information between researchers who worl on Pacific Russia in the past and present.
