CfA: Research Scholarship 2026

The Max Weber Network Eastern Europe is awarding one- to three-month research fellowships for research on historical topics in archives and libraries in the post-Soviet states (except Russia and Belarus) and Finland for the period from 1 January to 31 July 2026. The scholarship program is aimed at young researchers in the humanities and social sciences at German universities and research institutions. Please note that due to the war-related security situation, no scholarships can currently be awarded for research stays in Ukraine.
Application requirements
Applicants must have at least a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification (state examination, diploma) in the humanities and/or social sciences, be affiliated with a German university or research institution and be pursuing a research project there that serves the purpose of further academic qualification.
Countries and regions
Applicants for a research scholarship can apply for research stays in up to two countries (e.g. Lithuania and Georgia) or in one region (e.g. Baltic States, incl. Finland; South Caucasus; Central Asia).
Funding rates
The scholarship is intended to cover additional expenses resulting from the research stay in the post-Soviet states and in Finland. The amount of the scholarship is determined by the Max Weber Network Eastern Europe and is based on the DFG guidelines. In the case of research stays in a country or region, the travel costs for one outward and one return journey are reimbursed. In the case of research stays in two countries located in two different regions (e.g. Baltic States and Central Asia), the travel allowance will be granted for a one further trip.
The guidelines for awarding and the amount of the scholarship are defined in the scholarship regulations.
Application documents
The application documents must be submitted in German or English. Please note that the documents must be accompanied by a written confirmation from the archives to be consulted, stating that the applicant has access to the respective archives and is authorised to view the fonds there. Please, submit the following documents:
- A completed and signed application form
- Exposé of the research project (incl. work plan)
- Outline of the research to be conducted during MWNO scholarship
- Confirmation of access to the archives to be consulted
- Copy of university diploma / doctoral certificate
- Curriculum vitae (with list of publications if applicable)
- Letter of recommendation by academic supervisor (for PhD students) or expert in the field
